The Song of the Sybil

One of the interpretations of the Cant de la Sibil·la most relevant at the time, because of the great documentation that we preserve, was the one that was interpreted in the Cathedral of Valencia. We have to go back in the eleventh century to find the first documentation regarding Sibylla in the Cathedral of Valencia. The manuscript 78 of the Archive of the Headquarters includes a Sermo de symbolo with the corresponding verses of Sibila, although it is not easy to justify the presence of this manuscript before the dam of the city by King Jaime I, unless it was acquired after this event.

To follow the documentary trail left by the Sibyl in Valencia, it is necessary to travel to the year 1464 where the Sermo de symbolo occupied the Sixth Lesson of the Christmas Maitines, according to a Breviary preserved in the Valencian Cathedral. Sanchis and Sivera tells us in 1909 that “in the second night of the matins, the lliçó VI was of Sant Agustí, on es troba the testimony of the Sibil·la Eritrea, repetint després of each dístic the first: Judicii tellus … segons es veu in a Breviari valencià of 1464. Després es van afegir tots els testimonis that will prophesy the vinguda of Jesus Christ, els quals announce the reader in this way: desembre tu, Jeremia, dicat et Isaias.”

Of the many preserved versions of the Cant de Sibil·la, and with the aim of restoring this tradition and reflecting on the coming of Christ to the world and beyond, Carles Magraner, director of Capella de Ministrers, restored the 2012 – for his repercussion- the version of the Cathedral of Valencia under historically documented criteria, with the influences that the Toledan tradition exerted on it and its links with the Mallorcan one, declared in 2010 by the UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

A treasure of our musical and religious heritage lost during five centuries and that now has returned with all its splendor to the Metropolitan Headquarters. A recovery that restored this Song of Sibyl and adapt the whole paraliturgical structure of the drama, for which the replica instruments of the ones that play the angels musicians of the frescoes of the main altar of the Cathedral use. For the restoration Carles Magraner counted on the collaboration of several specialists, like the professor of medieval music MariCarmen Gómez Muntané (UAB) and especially of the recently disappeared Josep Lluís Sirera, professor of medieval theater of the Universitat de València, in charge of rewriting the textual adaptation of the drama, especially the Sermon of the Prophets that preceded the Sibylline chant. Serve these lines to honor his valuable academic career.
