As a preparatory event for the 750th anniversary of his death, the first edition of the Jaume I Festival at the Monastery of Santa Maria del Puig is being presented, where each year a well-deserved tribute will be paid to the figure of the Conqueror King. This festival will honor Jaume I through music and the work of Capella de Ministrers, and it will also engage with literature, the visual arts, and the performing arts in a cross-disciplinary manner. The festival will include lectures, concerts, round tables, research, outreach, workshops, and many other activities, creating a unique festival that is not only cultural but also a part of our history, serving as a catalyst and promoter of economic and tourist incentives.

EL RECORD DE JAUME I EN EL SEGLE D’OR
Francesc Granell (University of Valencia)
The memory of Jaime I can be understood through written testimonies from the late Middle Ages—documents from his reign, poems by contemporary troubadours, contemporary or posthumous chronicles…—but also, and above all, through visual ones: the subtle and dazzling miniatures of manuscripts, the corporeal paintings on panels, or the recreations of the king’s figure in festive parades are some of the manifestations of the era that allow us to connect directly with the idea that society of his time had of King James. As vehicles of memory, agitators of emotions, and instructors of history, images can show the different conceptions of the monarch in the early period following his death. The gallery is rich, and the number of notable works is significant: no monarch had received such consideration—at least in the field of visual arts—no other king could be represented amid such an impactful work as the ‘Retablo de Sant Jordi del Centenar de la Ploma,’ nor could he be remembered as frequently as in the celebrations of San Dionís and San Jordi. An important fragment of the memory of the Valencians, both the powerful and the vassals, was reserved for the monarch. And today, we continue to keep it present. This conference aims to explore the contents of this monograph and open a debate on the legacy of Jaume I in late medieval Valencia, as well as the influence that his historical figure has had on the construction of the myth that endures to this day.

The founding of the Monastery of Santa Maria del Puig is due to the will of King Jaume I. While he was in the present-day town of El Puig preparing the siege of the city of Valencia, Saint Peter Nolasco, founder of the Order of Mercy, discovered, buried beneath a small hill where the monastery now stands and under a bell, an image of the Virgin Mary in the form of a stone icon. Considering this discovery a miraculous event, the king proclaimed Santa Maria del Puig as the Patroness of the Kingdom of Valencia, ordering the construction of a monastery to house the image and entrusting the Order of Mercy with the perpetual guardianship of the sanctuary.COM ARRIBARHOW TO GET THEREEn Rodalia: Línies C5 i C6.
