In June 2004, under the rococo vault of Juan P\u00e9rez Castiel in Valencia Cathedral, beautiful paintings dating from 1474 were discovered. These early Renaissance works depict angels playing musical instruments in a celestial vault. Painted by Paolo de San Leocadio and Francesco Pagano shortly after the fire of 1469, around 1474, the future Pope Alexander VI ordered both painters to produce the frescoes that can now be seen again, after the P\u00e9rez Castiel vault was dismantled.<\/span><\/div>\n

Carles Magraner worked on the reconstruction of each of the instruments of these angels. There are 12 different musical instruments that move from the walls to the three dimensions to interpret the contemporary musical legacy of the frescoes.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Exhibition<\/h1>\n

For technical reasons, we regret to inform you of the temporary closure of the exhibition D’Atzur i Or.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

This permanent exhibition was created following the discovery in July 2004 of the Renaissance paintings in the Main Chapel of Valencia Cathedral. It was not a chance discovery, as its existence was already known, but it was the result of a search, study and research through the documentation preserved. The aim of this exhibition is to highlight not only the splendour of these frescoes, but also the splendour of an era and the work of recovering our heritage.<\/p>\n

Thematically, the exhibition is presented as the conjunction of several areas:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. This is provided by the paintings themselves, which are explicitly presented as one of the most interesting discoveries in painting at the time.<\/li>\n
  2. A second area would be its relationship and contextualisation in relation to the historical moment of the city of Valencia and San Miquel de los Reyes.<\/li>\n
  3. The significance of the musical angels and their identification with musical instruments and compositions would form a third area of the exhibition.<\/li>\n
  4. The fourth and final section refers to the discovery and subsequent enhancement using the most sophisticated restoration techniques.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The most significant element of the exhibition is a reconstruction of the musical instruments carried by the musician angels in their hands, made by important Spanish and European luthiers under the direction and coordination of Carles Magraner, who, knowing the historical moment and its musical value, have allowed the reconstruction of part of the musical pieces developed by music historians and musicologists.<\/p>\n
